The journey to Kyoto took about an hour, so we had to wake up real early. I woke up at 5 a.m. and had to wake the other two lazy bums. We didn't even stop for breakfast because I was that excited!
On the train, we saw people travelling to work and school. I'm assuming that they are from other towns that had to commute to work or school. It was still quite early, so I'm surprised that there were so many people on the train.
When we arrived at Kyoto Station, we wanted to go to Fushimi Inari Taisha but there was a problem with the train going there so we looked for a place to have breakfast.
The meal Chin Yee ordered was quite a spread. She had fish, egg, vegetables and miso soup while my brother and I had noodles. I just have to say that Chin Yee's meal looked like a feast when compared to our meal.
I had udon, while I think my brother had soba. My soup was nice and light and the noodles were soft and smooth. The only thing I didn't like is the vegetables in mine. There were just too much of them!
Before we got to Fushimi Inari Taisha, I just want to say we got to experience rush hour at the train station. We did not get jammed into the train like the videos you see in YouTube, instead we had to push through a crowd going the other direction. It was war!!! It was every man or woman for him/herself! It took a lot of skill of dodging to avoid being pushed the opposite direction of where you wanted to go. Since this was my first time experiencing this, I just muscled my way through the crowd to push through instead of skills. It was a scary and sort of thrilling experience.
After getting through the crowd, we got on the train to go to Fushimi Inari Taisha. We got off at Inari Station, which conveniently was one street away from Fushimi Inari Taisha. I know I've said this before, but I absolutely love the public transport in Japan!
The above pictures are the temples at the bottom, but you can actually climb the mountain to get to the tori gates and other temples that are a part of Fushimi Inari Taisha. We only managed to climb maybe half? I was super tired and wanted to call it quits. My brother wanted to climb all the way to the top but he was outvoted by Chin Yee and I.
While climbing up the mountain, we were surrounded by trees. There were a lot of tourists climbing up the mountain with us. There were even tourists that were way older than us, yet they seemed to be able to climb the mountain better. Most of them were not even panting, I even saw a girl in a dress climbing. It was quite embarrassing that they were totally fine, while I was panting like crazy.
Climbing down the mountain, we had two paths to choose. We can either follow the path we used to climb up the mountain or a new path. We decided to use the new path so that we can see a different scenery while climbing down.
We bought sakura, sake and soy bean flavoured ice creams. The flavour was not very strong or overwhelmingly sweet.
The sakura flavoured one had a hint of flowery scent and was not very sweet, but it was delicious all the same.
The soy bean one didn't taste much like soy bean, the flavour was very subtle. However, I still liked it.
The sake one tasted nice...at first, but after a while it had a strong aftertaste that I did not like.
After leaving Fushimi Inari Taisha, we rushed to Nishiki Market. It was very different from Kuromon Market because the shops here sold a variety of goods including clothes, toys etc. It did not have as much seafood stalls as the one in Kuromon Market.
I wanted to come to Nishiki Market mainly because I watched a YouTube video about a shop here selling soybean doughnuts and a lot of vloggers raved about the taste. Thank God there was no queue when we finally found the place, so it didn't take long for us to get our doughnuts.
There was even a table and two chairs next to the shop with some cute photo props. The doughnut was not super oily and it was light and fluffy. It was also not overwhelmingly sweet so I did not feel like I was eating something unhealthy.
After Nishiki Market, we wanted to try on kimonos and walked around Gion. There were a lot of shops that rent out kimonos but since I was bigger and taller, the kimonos I could choose were limited.
We went to three different shops before I finally agreed to rent a kimono. This was mainly because I did not like the kimono choices that I had at the previous two shops. If I was gonna fork out a fortune to dress in a kimono, I wanted to look pretty! The price of kimono was depending on your size and of course the quality of the kimono. You had to pay extra if you want your hair done too. Chin Yee and I went full out and did our hairs before wandering around Gion.
We wandered around Gion and just enjoyed the historical vibe the place had to offer. The streets and buildings around us made us feel like we had entered a different era. We could pretend that we were a part of their society way back then especially since we were dressed for the part.
We were surprised to see the brand Hermes shop there. It was housed in a traditional Japanese building, which was amazing. I absolutely loved how they blend modern and history in this beautiful city!
After walking for about an hour in shoes that did not fit, we stopped at Tsujiri near Gion had sweet icy desserts. I apologise for not remembering any of the prices because I was in a kimono and I did not bring my notebook with me when we went there. I do remember that the desserts were so...good....
Chin Yee got a parfait that has matcha cake, ice cream etc. Chin Yee and I can't really remember but it was good.
Mine was matcha with yuzu that was refreshing. There was no red bean, which is why I chose this! You mostly taste the yuzu and a hint of matcha. It's the perfect dessert for a hot summer day...or whenever, because there are no rules when it comes to awesome desserts.
My brother ordered matcha with red bean kakigori, which also taste good. I only took a bite since there was red bean....
After we returned the kimonos, we grabbed dinner at a restaurant nearby. The restaurant seemed to specialise in omurice so we decided to try it.
Chin Yee ordered this omurice, which made me had food regret. The prawn looked so good!! She also had hamburger with her omurice.
This was what I ordered. I honestly do not know if it's just that I could not get use to the taste or the omurice just wasn't good. I tried it and I did not liked it. The taste was bland, in fact everything was bland. Honestly, I think all our omurice tasted the same. The difference was probably just the sauce and either it was chicken or seafood.
This concludes our 1 day trip to Kyoto! It was a very short trip so I hope to come visit again and explore Kyoto more.
