I love strawberries. Before we even left Malaysia, I was going on and on that I would get my hands on strawberries in Japan.
At Kuromon Market, we saw a fruit stall that was selling all these tasty-looking fruits. For your information, I don't usually eat a lot of fruit but I could totally see myself eating fruit a lot in Japan. The fruits here were not cheap, but this stall actually sold strawberries individually so I bought one although it cost me like RM12 for one.
First off, I would like to say the strawberry was worth every yen. It was sweet and delicious. Now, I kind of wished I bought a few different types while I was there like the white strawberry.
After eating fruit, we walked around Kuromon Market looking for something else to eat. The market offered meat, seafood, drinks, traditional snacks and so much more. There were so many things I wanted to eat but due to the fact that we're not gazillionaires, we only chose a few to try.
Most of the stalls would cook what you order on the spot so the food was definitely fresh. The seafood were all huge and displayed at the front of the shops.
This was our first seafood of the day! We had two different types of barbecued scallops with sauce (¥700 & ¥780 each) and also one chuka idako ( ¥250). The scallop was absolutely delicious and the chuka idako was stuffed with egg, which I had never seen in Malaysia.
The next dish was something I wanted to try but the other two refused to share with me. It's the puffer fish! Since I was already in Japan , I had to try it! This plate of puffer fish was expensive (¥1200) but at least I can say I ate a poisonous fish and lived. The plate had the cooked flesh of the puffer fish, sashimi and also the skin. I managed to foist a few pieces to my brother, but mostly I ate the entire plate by myself.
I just have to say that this would probably be the first and last time I ate puffer fish. The fish did not taste good and the texture was similar to rubber. It did not taste like any of the fish I had eaten in my entire life. I also have to mention that I got a slight headache afterwards. It could be psychology or the fish's poison, I don't know.
We also had grilled crab with butter, cheese, corn and maybe cream? This cost us ¥400 each, since we all ordered one. It tasted creamy and did not taste as good as it looked. There was hardly any crab meat so I felt cheated.
Next, Chin Yee ate an eel skewer, which looked amazing. I tried one bite but it tasted different than the ones in Malaysia so I was shocked and could not get use to the taste. The eel also had a lot of bones unlike the boneless ones that I had eaten in Malaysia, so it was not to my liking.
Chin Yee also bought green tea with milk which tasted okay. I just prefer my green tea in a different manner.
We also wanted to try Kobe beef but the price was just too expensive. We circled around the market a few times before my brother caved and bought some to try. My brother might have caved in to temptation but he bought the set that was cheapest. The lady barbecued the meat on the spot.
When I tried the beef, I was amazed at how different it tasted. I actually don't really like beef because of the smell and the texture, All the beef I had eaten was either tough and hard to chew or smelled. Kobe beef showed me how wrong I was to thought that beef were all the same. The meat was so tender and it tasted so good. You don't have to hurt your jaw chewing because it practically melts in your mouth. I am actually salivating as I am writing this, that's how good it was!
After that, we bought some desserts to munch on while we head on to our next destination. I bought green tea and chocolate mochi and my brother bought those ball-thingys that I do not know the name of. The taste was pretty much what I predicted. The mochi was chewy and covered in green tea powder with a hint of sweetness. The chocolate one didn't taste as awesome but still good.
Our next destination is a symbol of Osaka, the Osaka Castle. If you go to Osaka and skipped this, it's like you were never in Osaka and that is how important it is. We don't have to pay the entry fee thanks to the Osaka Pass.
We did not get to see the full bloom of sakuras because we went to Osaka in late April, so the flowers were already gone. We only got to see the late-blooming type sakura, but it's still better than nothing. As you can imagine, the castle was huge, we were too tired to walk all the way to the castle from the entrance so we got on a buggy to get to the castle.
Here are some picture of the late-blooming sakuras. At first, we were not sure if they were indeed sakuras, but a kind Japanese artist told us that they were a late-blooming type,
You can actually go into the castle and look at the exhibitions there because the castle had been converted to a museum. There were videos of the history of the castle, old battle-gear, antique decorations, etc in the museum. The inside of the castle had been modernized, which was a pity because I wanted to know how it looked like back in the day. However, the structure was still the same so we could still imagine the outline of the castle.
While at the museum, I learned the construction of the castle and found it utterly fascinating so I definitely recommend you guys to watch the video on the construction of the castle.
After spending a few hours at Osaka Castle, we left and headed to the Museum of House and Living. The museum was in a building and not a standalone building. At this point, I was no longer surprised. However, I did imagine it to be a reconstruction of old Osaka, sort of like an outdoor theme park but I was wrong. It's actually in a building that looked like an office building.
The Museum of House and Living recreated old Osaka, which you get to wander round. You actually can rent kimonos while you wander, but by the time we got there, the kimonos had all been rented out. You also get to see exhibitions of the history of Osaka and how it came to the modern Osaka we see today.
These are some of the items on display at the museum. You can see the Osaka before western influence and after western influence.
After that, we head to America-mura. This area was heavily influenced by western culture. As we walk along the street, we see fancy cars and hear English music blared out from the shops there.
We didn't really stay in this area that long because we were hungry and tired.
After walking all day, we were all starving. I felt like we didn't really had a proper meal the entire day. As we were walking , I spied a familiar shop. It was Coco Ichibanya! Chin Yee and I had actually eaten at Coco Ichibanya in Malaysia and we both love their curry because you get to personalise your meal and choose how spicy do you want your curry.
Of course, the menu in Japan was different than the one in Malaysia. There were more choices and the spicy level goes up to level 10 while it was only until level 5 in Malaysia.
¥970 Pork cutlet curry with cheese:
I ordered level 10 so my nose was runny and my eyes were watery while I ate. It wasn't chili spicy, more like pepper spicy. Although I was sort of torturing myself, it still tasted delicious.
¥699 Hamburger cheese:
I can't say much about this dish. The hamburger was chewy and the rice was soft, it was good but I prefer my spicy level 10 dish more.
That's all for Day 3, we will post Day 4 in Osaka soon! Here are some bonus pictures :
Foods all looks yummy..how i wish i can visit japan one find day..
