Day 2 in Osaka 玩游大阪 DAY 2

On Day 2 of our Japan trip, we woke up bright and early and headed to a shrine near the apartment. It was called the Nanbayasaka Shrine. This shrine was a bit different from the other shrines because it was built in the shape of an enormous lion-head shaped Ema-Den. Here are a picture of said lion-head:

The shrine wasn't that big but it was really pretty.  It also had another building next to it. Here are some pictures around the shrine:

After our visit to the Nanbayasaka Shrine, we had breakfast at Matsuya Foods. Matsuya Foods Co. is a Japanese major restaurant chain serving gyudon, other donburi, and curry. Here’s what the restaurant looked like:

It was at this restaurant that we got to try ordering food via vending machine for the first time! You can actually pay through the vending machine or your ICOCA card, which is super convenient.

These were the food we ordered:

¥400 Gyumeshi with spicy sauce:
It had crunchy green onions and thin slices of beef on top of Japanese rice. It was not really spicy, I could barely taste the spicy part of the dish. The thin strips of beef was tender and delicious.

I didn’t really try my brother’s and Chin Yee’s dish so I can’t comment about those. Sorry! The dishes Chin Yee and my brother ordered:

After breakfast, we decided to head Tennoji Temple. On our way there, we saw another shrine and decided to drop by. The shrine was called Shikitsumatsunomiya Okuninushi Shrine.

After that, we went to Tennoji Temple. I researched beforehand and knew that there was going to be flea market on this day, which was the main reason I put this on the itinerary for today.

Tennoji Temple is really big and the flea market was in full swing when we arrived. We didn't really spent much time at the flea market, we just walked around browsing the goods on sale. There were antiques, handmade goods, clothes etc on sale. There was also a festival there on the same day. When we arrived, they were still preparing for the festival and some sort of performance but sadly we were in a rush so we didn’t stay to watch it.

We headed to Umeda and dropped by The City Bakery for a snack. Chin Yee wanted to go to this bakery because it was a bakery from the U.S that she read about online. I bought a double chocolate cookie dark (¥290) and a matcha white chocolate, macadamia nuts biscuit (¥340). Both which I don’t really care for. The cookie was too sweet and the biscuit I can’t really comment because I put in a fridge and forgot about it. I finally ate it after like…3 days? So it tasted horrible, not the bakery’s fault.

The green tea thing biscuit I bought. It looks ugly mainly because I left it in the fridge a few days and forgot about it before taking this picture.

Then, we went to the Pokemon Centre. I thought it was a building by itself, but it turned out that it was in a shopping centre. I was a bit disappointed with the Pokemon Centre because there was not much to see. It was just a small section selling Pokemon merchandise.

After walking so much, I was starving. We had lunch at Botejyu (I seriously hope this is the right name). Once again, we feast on okonomiyaki and yakisoba and a new dish. There was a lot of okonomiyaki and takoyaki consumed on this trip, just giving you guys a heads-up.

1350¥ Shrimp & Seafood Okonomiyaki:

This tasted average, quite a disappointment compared to the one at Creo-ru. I know there’s expensive ingredients here, but it just did not taste that good.

950¥ Osaka Modern-yaki:

This also tasted average, another disappointment.

450¥ Akashi Tamagoyaki:

It looks like takoyaki but does not taste as good. It’s very underwhelming. The soup that accompanied the dish is just so-so. At first, I thought it was tasteless, but after a while I could taste it. The taste is sort of like anchovies soup.

After filling our bellies, we head to Hep Five to ride the Ferris wheel there. I assumed that the Ferris wheel is outside of the building but I was surprised to find that it’s actually on a building, which made it super high up. If this trip has taught me something, you should never assume in Japan because your assumption will be blasted to smithereens. We used the Osaka Pass we bought to get a free admission. My brother is scared of heights, but since it’s free (sort of) I made him go on it.

The view is mostly of the city but we also managed to see Osaka Castle and other landmarks from the Ferris wheel. You can even enjoy your own music while on the Ferris wheel. You just have to plug your phone to a speaker in the cab.

Then, we went to Ohatsu Tenjin Shrine. It’s a shrine for love. The shrine is erected in honour of a pair of lovers who committed suicide at the forest of Tsuyuno Tejinsha. There’s a brochure that tells the story of the lovers in detail at the shrine. If you are interested, you can read more about the history of the shrine  and the story about the lovers at:
http://www.tuyutenjin.com/en/story.html

Chin Yee and I are both took a picture at the love shrine, but since both of us are single, the guy side was left empty. I know...we're quite a sad pair.

After that, I was hungry again (bear with me, I’m always hungry in Japan) and asked Chin Yee and my brother to stop for a meal at Kiou (again, I hope the name is right). I didn't really tagged this shop in Google Maps. I was just hungry and this shop was nearby. We had ramen, gyoza and chicken there.

¥980 Gyoza and chicken:

The gyoza has soft and thin skin. It’s crunchy at the bottom, where they fried it and soft on the top. It’s yummy!
The chicken is crispy and tender but I’ve tasted better.

¥780 Brother’s ramen (the name is in Japanese, sorry):
This ramen looked awesome, I got a bite and I think it tasted better than mine (I don't remember, sorry!) because I remember wishing I ordered that instead. .

¥830 My ramen (also in Japanese):
My ramen was supposed to be spicy but it was not really spicy. The picture sort of tricked me into thinking it’ll be spicy because of all that red colour. The pork is tender and the noodles they use is the noodles we use to make Wan Tan Mee. I am bias because the Wan Tan Mee's noodles to me, should only be used in Wan Tan Mee so yeah…not loving ramen.

At night, we went to the Umeda Sky Building. Thanks to the Osaka Pass we bought, we did not have to pay an entrance fee to go to their observatory deck. The building was super tall and had a unique look to it.

To get up to the observatory deck, we had to take an elevator and an awesome escalator that brings you to the top floor, where you can enjoy the view of Osaka. The floor of the observatory deck had these glow in the dark things that was just too pretty. In fact once we got there, our clothes and shoes started to glow, which is totally cool.

After a tiring day, we head home. On our way back, we stop by a restaurant on the way for dinner. Don’t judge us! There was lot of walking and fat burning, so we deserve food! We went to a shop called Tenkaippin. We ordered:

My bro’s ramen (thick broth):
I just don't like thick broth ramen. The taste just feels weird to me, maybe because I'm not used to it but I don't think I will like thick broth ramen anytime soon.

Chin Yee’s ramen (mixed broth):
It's a mixture of thick broth and light broth so I like this broth the most because it’s not too thick and just nice. As Goldilocks would say it, ' It's just right.'

I ordered a set meal. It’s ramen (light broth) and fried rice:
My soup is clear and light. The fried rice chewy and smells really good. The taste, however is kind of bland.
