I only found out about this movie a few weeks before it released thanks to the Internet. I know it's a musical, Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone are in it. I also saw a poster of them dancing under the stars but that's the extent of my knowledge about the movie. One of the reasons I really wanted to watch this movie is because it is a musical and I have a thing for movies where people who burst out in songs and dance. In fact, life would be real cool if we live like that.
Chin Yee and I went to a cinema nearby to watch it. I was super hyped but alas I was kind of disappointed. I know a lot of people are singing praises and absolutely love the movie, which makes me one of the few rare people who actually dislike it. If you are reading this, please know that there might be some spoilers. If you have not watched the movie and do not want it to be spoiled, stop reading now.

First, let's start with what I like about the movie. I think the movie looks amazing. The visuals are stunning and it has very colorful scheme. Besides that, the music is beautiful. The movie has an old Hollywood feel to it. Those who love old Hollywood films would get a kick out of this since it gives off the feeling of the Golden Age of Hollywood. As for the acting, Emma Stone did a good job portraying Mia and her singing was nice.

Now, let's get into the stuff I didn't like. Some of the scenes in the movie bore me, the pace is kind of slow. There are also scenes I feel are forced into the movie to make way for the music. In my opinion, a musical should have music complement the scene and not the other way round. I know I’m picky but I think there should be more singing. It’s a musical so I expect loads of singing in everyday life situations. I also find that most of the musical numbers have a section where there’s no singing and just instrumental going on. I need more singing in my musicals! The music also has repetitive tune in most of the songs. I get that it’s the theme but can’t we have more variety? In addition to that, I keep forgetting this movie is set in present day. If it were not for the cellphones and computers, you would think the movie was set in a different period.
In addition to that, I’d probably be crucified for saying this but I’m not a real Ryan Gosling fan. I don’t really get all the hype for him. His performance was okay but I think Emma Stone was better. As for the plot, it’s the usual chase your dreams kind of shtick but the ending is what really kills me. I’m a literature student so I get the realism and the happy but not really happy ending. However, the movie also gave us the beautiful possible ending with the two main characters. A possibility of what could have been was dangled in front the audience and then snatched away, that’s just cruel. I kind of understand what they were going for and a part of me likes the ending but ultimately, I’m still a sucker for happy endings and want this movie to end the other way.
There have also been complaints around the net of how Ryan Gosling’s character, a white guy is trying to save jazz (a music genre started by black guys). Although I think it’s fine because there are people in reality that like music genres not traditionally associated with their race and they rock, I do feel that the movie is too white. I know we usually get movies with nothing but white people, but add that with the old Hollywood vibe and lack of other races hence making me feel the movie is too white. The movie also try to sell the fact that Ryan Gosling is trying to save jazz by being pure, but I honestly think John Legend’s character had the right idea. You need to evolve as time goes; instead the movie tries to reinforce that being pure and traditional is the way to go. Is this a statement of how the elites wish that things were like the old days? cause the old days aren’t that great when you think about it. There are social issues that isolate anyone who is not a white elite (I’m referring to America specifically, not Asian countries etc though each country has similar social issues).

In conclusion, I do not hate this movie’s guts nor do I love it. If you love musicals, you should definitely give it a try and judge for yourself. After all, a lot of people love this movie and I’m one of the few that actually disliked it.
